Missouri roadblock officers change tune when they’re videotaped

31 December 2006

Partial transcript of audio; video you may watch yourself.

Officer #1: I was trying to have a conversation.
Brett: I didn’t want to have a conversation. You stopped me officer in the middle of the road.

Archie McPhee, Dynamism

27 December 2006

We went for a trip to the Archie McPhee store. I was tempted by the ninja duck and the avenging unicorn playset. The irony of the U.S.A. vs. Commies Plastic Soldiers being manufactured in China was excellent, but I was ultimately able to pass on everything. Alan wanted to stop by Federal Army and Navy Surplus the other day, so we finally did. They have this large M16 cutout made of wood that’s neat to look at; they’ve added fake AK47 and M16’s to the stable, as well. For $200, you could buy a DEWAT kit and have something that actually looked nice.

If you’re looking for interesting tech imports from Japan, Dynamism has devices you cannot yet get in the US.

12 egg omelette

24 December 2006

I took the kids to Beth’s Cafe. Alan battled the 12 egg omelette for about 40 minutes; I think he won:
He begins:
Alan works on breakfast
He finishes:
Alan finishes

[2012-06-20 12:32:30] (ibanix) teferi: you sound like RyJones (that’s not a compliment)
[2012-06-20 12:32:47] (teferi) ibanix: ’s true a lot of the time
[2012-06-20 12:33:28] (@PetrDoubt) If “sounds like Ry” means “correct,” it is a compliment.

Bill’s house

17 December 2006

For the last two nights the only illuminated patch on the south side of the 520 floating bridge is Bill’s house. I wonder what kind of business continuity planning went into his off-grid power design.

We’re alive in the great Northwest

16 December 2006

As usual, everyone goes crazy when there’s the slightest disruption of services. The police in Bellevue are directing traffic at the one gas station with power (AM/PM on NE 8th); we drove by, the line runs from NE 8th to Main Street. Trees are down all over the place; many roads are blocked by power lines and trees.

Security at work sent out a couple of emails telling everyone to stay home because there’s no power on campus. Alan and I stopped by and grabbed my laptop (so I could blog!) and cruised around. The Safeway in downtown Bellevue is open and taking plastic; they had lots of batteries and water. We’re at a Subway; they are out of bread. Wraps only! The hardship!

Blogging at the Subway

Without the inverter, I’d be boned for blogging. We drove to Factoria and parked outside T Mobile’s WHQ to get UMTS service. The Seattle Times has lots of updates.

Automation toolkits

5 December 2006

I’ve been looking at Phidgets recently. Not sure what kit I’ll buy, probably something cheap and small to start. Looks like home automation, robotics toolkits, and microcontroller (PIC) programming all in one.
