John Beatty, hero

28 November 2007

John Beatty used his F-350 pickup to block a moving vehicle from crossing the centerline on the Golden Gate bridge. The driver, as it turns out, was incapacitated and later died.

“When you think about all the lawsuits and liability that goes on today, I probably wouldn’t have done it,” Beatty said. “But you don’t think. I saw she was going into oncoming traffic, and it would have been a horrible accident.” Beatty said that afterward, he pulled off into a parking lot to calm down for an hour as his adrenaline raced. “I lead a kind of low-key life. Excitement’s not my bag,” he said.

Well done, Mr Beatty.

Marking time

24 November 2007

My sister Leah notes that she’s been at this blogging thing for four solid years now. Sadly, my use of this software only goes back to June of 2003; the way back machine captures some earlier goofing around with a date of 27 April 2003. I had a blog-like thing on my web page back on 19 Aug 2000. My guess is I’ll never be able to sleuth a year, much less a date, where I started blogging; like the woman that’s perpetually 39 or the income bracket that is 100k+, I’ll forever be without a real number to mark. With that, I’ll note that every day is my anniversary; I’ll tool around in the warm glow of sharing this date with my sisters - both of them - and with everyone else that blogs, as well. Happy anniversary, Leah!

Got to buy an STI now

14 November 2007

STI issued a press release (pdf) in which they cease sales into California. That’s two - now I have to buy something from STI to show support. I’d pick up a pistol, but Joe had the barrel lug break off one, so I’ll stick with the Beretta. Fortunately, the STI ball cap is $12.

DipNote

7 November 2007

DipNote is the official blog of the US Department of State. In A Letter From Iraq to My Overwrought Colleagues, John Matel lets his colleagues have it. Good reading.

Amen.
