Things I love

The bigots among us

With regard to the Boomershoot:

I’ve always thought there are some events that shouldn’t get National TV coverage.

When we’d like the public to think of competitive shooting to be like other mainstream sports.

Jim Scoutten, Shooting USA

Not much more to say than our worst enemies come from within. Thanks, Kevin, for asking.

  1. I was going to ask Joe’s opinion before I published that, but I have to admit that Scoutten surprised me with his response. And it wasn’t a good kind of surprise.

  2. “When we’d like the public to think of competitive shooting to be like other mainstream sports.”

    That’s not even a sentence. Is this person a “professional journalist” by any chance?

    I’ll correct it for him;
    “When we’d like the public to think of competitive shooting as if it were a mainstream sport.”

    It is of course a mainstream sport, and “the public” knows that. It’s just not depicted that way in the Old Media. We can modify the statement to give it meaning;

    “When we’d like see accurate and frequent reporting on the shooting sports from the Old Media (though we know it will never happen as the Old Media exist to impugn all things traditionally American). Shooting is a mainstream sport like any other, and most people are interested in seeing it. Sport shooting is a positive American tradition that teaches valuable skills, and no one in their right mind would be embarrassed by it.”

    All fixed?

  3. I also read the entire thread and agree with Jim. I loved the coverage of Knob Creek on shooting gallery, so if Jim wants to cover only certain events then I’m OK with that…let other shows produce what they want to broadcast.

    If I had a friend who was interested in getting into shooting I would steer them towards Jim’s shows long before I would show them a knob creek type show. Trying to show that it’s not all high dollar guns and ammo but a lot of ordinary people enjoying a day at the range is portrayed better by Jim than other shows.

    I for one went to my local range after watching Jim’s show three years ago, the range folks (shooting IDPA that day) never greeted me or gave me the time of day, but at least my interest was there because of Jim’s shows. I still shoot, but haven’t had the “courage” to go back and befriend the local club.
