Loss detection
Sometimes, detecting a missing frobnitz is as easy as looking at the space it left behind; a bike missing a wheel will be obvious, even to non-bike-experts. In other situations, you have to rely on external references to prove loss: a picture, an email, a résumé; all may provide a reference to what was before.
