Unraveling Bolero (it isn’t clear which person says this, so I can’t attribute the quote correctly)

Not only did the artist they discuss (Anne) have the same disease as the Ravel, but she became obsessed with the music and turning into visual arts. In a way, it seems, Ravel was sending a homing beacon over the ages to people with the same disease. I’ll avoid snark here, but there’s plenty of obvious snark for everyone to play.

  1. Hmm. Dunno. It seems a bit of a stretch. For one thing, Ravel was already a composer when he became afflicted. For another; the story is that he wrote Bolero not as a serious pursuit of art, but as a joke to taunt his critics who said he didn’t have enough dynamics in his work. Bolero was one big crescendo. One story has an old woman, upon hearing the piece shortly after, or at, it’s debut, screaming; “Rubbish! Rubbish!” When asked about the woman’s rudeness, Ravel is reported to have said; “That old woman got the point.”

Anyway, maybe to change the subject and maybe not; I would fully expect the Old Media and the subsidized “sciences” types (i.e. communists) to be attracted to the idea that creative people are creative because there’s something wrong with them.
