The rules in the court often specify formatting of filings down to the font, and you want to be able to examine your filing on that level to make sure that it complies (and they will use the same thing if they want to try to ding you on it.) I think the latest versions of Word have that ability, but it didn't at one time. (Still might not, I would have to check.) FWIW, in my experience it is because of the “reveal codes” function.
